Objectives

  • The aim of the Trust was to educate at least 100 children of poor widows in each of the 29 states throughout India, which has been achieved in 2006.

  • The charity's objectives are to promote the welfare and to educate the children of poor widows, or children who have lost a parent, or either of them, as a result of natural disaster and for other auxiliary purposes, as the Trustees may determine. The trustees have recently decided to include widows who have lost their husbands through HIV/AIDS.

  • All beneficiaries are selected irrespective of gender, religion and caste. The scholarship is guranteed for 5 years, initially.

  • After the launch of International Widows Day in 2005, the Loomba Trust is now aiming to expand its work in countries in South Asia and across Africa.

  • Our flagship International Widows Day, launched in 2005 by our president Cherie Blair QC, has gained widespread recognition and we are pressing ahead with our campaign to gain UN recognition of International Widows Day as afocus for sustained global action to raise awareness of the plight of widows in so many countries.
